In episode 8, it is revealed that Murderbot calls itself by that name and has a violent past, having previously killed 57 people on a mining expedition. This secret is uncovered when Gurathin probes into Murderbot's mind during a medical procedure, and then Murderbot explores Gurathin's thoughts in return.

GrayCris is revealed as the employer of Leebeebee and the shadowy antagonist behind the secret survey of the planet. They have bribed the Corporation Rim powers to allow them to search for alien relics to sell on the black market. GrayCris approaches the PresAux crew with a diplomatic meeting offer, which Murderbot suspects is a trap.

Murderbot plugs directly into Gurathin's body to dull his pain while Bharadwaj extracts necrotizing tissue caused by dirty clothing fragments in Gurathin's bullet wound. During this, Murderbot explores Gurathin's mind and discovers his feelings for Mensah. However, Gurathin then reverses the process and probes into Murderbot's mind, uncovering its identity and past.

The crew deduces that GrayCris likely did not orchestrate the attacks directly, but someone employed by the Company took a bribe to cover GrayCris' tracks. DeltFall was killed for knowing about GrayCris' presence on the planet. PresAux remains alive because GrayCris needs their data on the alien remnants' location, which Leebeebee failed to retrieve.

Murderbot struggles with the invasion of its privacy and tries to self-soothe by watching favorite episodes of the show Sanctuary Moon, but this provides little comfort. Inspired by a NavBot wormhole episode, Murderbot plans to play the role of a rogue SecUnit who betrayed its clients as part of its strategy moving forward.
